NRC Shuts Down Edo Train Station Indefinitely
On Sunday, the Nigeria Railway Corporation declared that Ekehen Station in Edo State would be closed till further notice.
Fidel Info reports that the organization claimed that as security threats increased, a decision had to be made.
The event happened just over a year after bandits attacked the Abuja-Kaduna train on March 28, 2022, killing roughly 14 people and kidnapping 65 more.
Lois Azurfa John, a victim and a 21-year-old student at Kaduna State University, explained to our correspondent why, when held captive by the rebels, she rebuffed marriage proposals from the Boko Haram commander.
The NRC stated in a public message released on the passengers’ WhatsApp group that the closure was “till further notice.”
The statement reads, “Public Announcement: This is to inform our general public and most especially our esteemed passengers, that Ekehen Station has been temporarily closed due to security issues, till further notice.”
Another notice reads, “Due to the incident at Ekehen station on Saturday, WITS 01/ 02 will no longer stop at Ekehen Station. Please advise our customers.”
Gunmen,on Saturday evening, abducted many passengers waiting to board a train from the Igueben station in Igueben Local Government Area of Edo State to Warri in Delta State, while many others sustained injuries.
The Spokesperson for Edo State Police Command, Chidi Nwabuzor, confirmed the incident in a statement.
According to him, the abductors, armed with AK 47, invaded the train station and shot sporadically into the air before abducting scores of intending travellers into the bush.
Nwabuzor said that many of the passengers sustained bullet wounds, assuring that operatives were on the trail of the abductors with an aim to rescue those the kidnappers herded into the bush.
He said, “This is to inform the gentlemen of the press that on January 7, 2023, at about 1600hrs, an unspecified number of herdsmen armed with AK-47 riffles attacked the train station at Igueben, Edo State and kidnapped an unspecified number of passengers who were waiting to board the train to Warri.
“The kidnappers who shot sporadically into the air before kidnapping some passengers left some persons with bullet wounds. The Area Commander Irrua, DPO Igueben Division, and men have visited the scene of the crime with members of the Edo State Security Network, local vigilantes, and hunters with a view to protecting the lives and property of the remaining passengers.”
“Bush combing operations have commenced in order to rescue the victims and arrest the fleeing kidnappers. Further developments will be communicated.”

IEPY Slams Saraki Over Unguarded Statements Against Emir
A sociocultural group, Ilorin Emirate Progressive Youths (IEPY) has carpeted former senate president, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, over his unguarded utterances against the Ilorin Emirate.
Fidel Info reports that IEPY in a statement on Monday signed by its Chairman, Engr. Bolaji Sadiq, expressed surprise that despite being a ranking traditional title holder of the Emirate (Waziri), Saraki could still be going about spiting the Emir and the Emirate.
The former senate president in reports of news mediums pledged to tear the Emirate structure apart by removing Moro out of it. Moro has always been a part of the Ilorin Emirate.
We understand that this pledge was dictated by his desperate need for sympathy votes to awaken his dead party. That was why he tried to wooed the Moro people with this sentiment during his tour to the community. However, our Emirate is not what politicians should use to play politics.
We are displeased that Dr. Saraki has not been portraying the Emirate in good light in recent times. We saw videos of how he came home some months back and on his way to the Ilorin Central Mosque was throwing wads of naira into the air for our people to hustle over, which might lead to stampede or even violence. This is apart from the dehumanising picture that such act paints to our people.
We recall that it was that same day he was dragging seat at the central mosque with the President’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari. Apart from his position as chief of staff to the number one citizen, Prof. Gambari is also a prince of Ilorin Emirate. We hope Saraki is not waging war against the Ilorin Emirate because he can never succeed in such. Promising traditional rulers in some parts of the state that his PDP government if supported will rotate the chairmanship position of the Kwara State Traditional Council is targeted at our revered Emir who has always been the Chairman of the Council.
We therefore use this platform to caution Dr. Bukola Saraki to guard his utterances and stop fueling discord because of politics. Politics would soon go but what he has said would remain.
