Governor Obaseki Addresses Labour Party Stadium Access Reports

Published

on

The Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, has reacted to the report that the state government denied Labour Party access to use the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium for the party’s political rally.

Fidel Info reports that Evangelist Tony Ekhine, who is a Labour Party Leader, said he wrote to the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, for the use of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium but was told that the premises were closed to political activities.

He was, however, advised to use the Garrick Ground opposite the University Of Benin, Ekewan Campus on Ekewan Road but was again denied the use of Garrick which necessitated the use of the Baptist Church Ground.

He said, “We wrote to the state government for the use of Sam Ogbemudia Stadium. The letter was acknowledged in the office of the SSG and we were advised to request the use of the Garrick ground, which we did and was granted to us But we were denied the use of the ground in the 11th hour. The act is barbaric, backward, primitive, and sad.”

The state governor, in his response, said the leadership of the Labour Party in the state applied for use of the facility late. Adding to that, they were not given ample time to prepare the facility for such an event.

He said, “I heard they applied on Wednesday night to hold a rally at the Samuel Ogbemudia stadium on Friday morning, giving us one day’s notice. And the tracks in the stadium are still under warranty.

“The pitch has to be maintained in a certain mode, so it’s not just another facility that you can go in and use without preparing.”

“If they knew they had a rally on Friday, why couldn’t they give more time and notice so that we give them the conditions under which they can use the pitch? The same thing we did to PDP when they wanted to use the pitch.”

“And the only reason why we allowed the PDP rally was because it was also used as an opportunity to commission that facility. Otherwise, most other rallies are held on other large grounds around the city. I expected more from the Labour party.”

He further said “I expect they should be more serious. I spoke to my friend Peter Obi the night before. He told me he was coming to the state and we offered him all the courtesies including the security and some logistics.

“I didn’t know they were coming for a rally. For me, the issue didn’t come up to me. The people had to deal with the issue at the Sports commission and they did what they had to do professionally,”he stated.

IEPY Slams Saraki Over Unguarded Statements Against Emir

Published

on

A sociocultural group, Ilorin Emirate Progressive Youths (IEPY) has carpeted former senate president, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, over his unguarded utterances against the Ilorin Emirate.

Fidel Info reports that IEPY in a statement on Monday signed by its Chairman, Engr. Bolaji Sadiq, expressed surprise that despite being a ranking traditional title holder of the Emirate (Waziri), Saraki could still be going about spiting the Emir and the Emirate.

The former senate president in reports of news mediums pledged to tear the Emirate structure apart by removing Moro out of it. Moro has always been a part of the Ilorin Emirate.

We understand that this pledge was dictated by his desperate need for sympathy votes to awaken his dead party. That was why he tried to wooed the Moro people with this sentiment during his tour to the community. However, our Emirate is not what politicians should use to play politics.

We are displeased that Dr. Saraki has not been portraying the Emirate in good light in recent times. We saw videos of how he came home some months back and on his way to the Ilorin Central Mosque was throwing wads of naira into the air for our people to hustle over, which might lead to stampede or even violence. This is apart from the dehumanising picture that such act paints to our people.

We recall that it was that same day he was dragging seat at the central mosque with the President’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari. Apart from his position as chief of staff to the number one citizen, Prof. Gambari is also a prince of Ilorin Emirate. We hope Saraki is not waging war against the Ilorin Emirate because he can never succeed in such. Promising traditional rulers in some parts of the state that his PDP government if supported will rotate the chairmanship position of the Kwara State Traditional Council is targeted at our revered Emir who has always been the Chairman of the Council.

We therefore use this platform to caution Dr. Bukola Saraki to guard his utterances and stop fueling discord because of politics. Politics would soon go but what he has said would remain.
