EFCC Raids Kano’s Forex Market
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) raid on the Wapa forex market in Kano has led to the arrest of at least Eight Bureau de Change (BDC) operators.
Fidel Info reports that operatives of the Kano command of the anti-graft agency stormed the forex market Tuesday evening with about eight vehicles and heavily armed personnel, a situation which threw the market into pandemonium.
This came following the mass raid in Abuja, leading to the arrest of some BDC operators about the recent hike in the dollar at parallel markets.
A witness, who asked to remain anonymous said before the operatives of the EFCC stormed the market late Tuesday, some of his colleagues had partially closed their shops because of the development in Abuja, and as such when the operatives stormed the market, many of them quickly shut down and ran out of the market.
One marketer said because of the development, many of them have decided to stay off the market for a while until things go back to normal, saying this was not the first time EFCC was raiding the market.
“Every time they raid this market, the price of dollar will go up. For instance, today (Wednesday) a dollar is N845 as against N835 it was being sold yesterday (Tuesday) before the EFCC raided us.”
“In fact, last week we were selling it at N750 but before the end of the week, it went up to N780. Problem is that it is because the government is not releasing dollars. The hike is not our fault. We buy expensive, so we have to sell it in a way to make a little profit,” the marketer said.
Confirming the operation, a senior staff of the agency, who asked to remain anonymous, said that the raid was conducted as part of the agency’s efforts to support the federal government to arrest the recent hike of forex.
The source said the anti-graft agency had been closely observing the roles of the BDC operators in the unfortunate hike and that money launderers have been using the BDC to obtain forex on black market in order to avoid losing their ill-gotten funds in Naira to the newly announced redesign of Naira notes.
The senior staff, who is very familiar with the operation, confirmed that during the raid, eight suspects were arrested for forex racketeering and engaging in forex without a legitimate license, adding that the suspects are now cooling off in the Kano command where the investigation is currently ongoing after which the necessary action would be taken.

IEPY Slams Saraki Over Unguarded Statements Against Emir
A sociocultural group, Ilorin Emirate Progressive Youths (IEPY) has carpeted former senate president, Abubakar Bukola Saraki, over his unguarded utterances against the Ilorin Emirate.
Fidel Info reports that IEPY in a statement on Monday signed by its Chairman, Engr. Bolaji Sadiq, expressed surprise that despite being a ranking traditional title holder of the Emirate (Waziri), Saraki could still be going about spiting the Emir and the Emirate.
The former senate president in reports of news mediums pledged to tear the Emirate structure apart by removing Moro out of it. Moro has always been a part of the Ilorin Emirate.
We understand that this pledge was dictated by his desperate need for sympathy votes to awaken his dead party. That was why he tried to wooed the Moro people with this sentiment during his tour to the community. However, our Emirate is not what politicians should use to play politics.
We are displeased that Dr. Saraki has not been portraying the Emirate in good light in recent times. We saw videos of how he came home some months back and on his way to the Ilorin Central Mosque was throwing wads of naira into the air for our people to hustle over, which might lead to stampede or even violence. This is apart from the dehumanising picture that such act paints to our people.
We recall that it was that same day he was dragging seat at the central mosque with the President’s Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari. Apart from his position as chief of staff to the number one citizen, Prof. Gambari is also a prince of Ilorin Emirate. We hope Saraki is not waging war against the Ilorin Emirate because he can never succeed in such. Promising traditional rulers in some parts of the state that his PDP government if supported will rotate the chairmanship position of the Kwara State Traditional Council is targeted at our revered Emir who has always been the Chairman of the Council.
We therefore use this platform to caution Dr. Bukola Saraki to guard his utterances and stop fueling discord because of politics. Politics would soon go but what he has said would remain.
