BREAKING: Nigeria’s D’Tigress Kicked Out Of Basketball W/Cup After FG Ban

Published

on

D’Tigress, Nigeria’s female basketball team, D’Tigress have been barred from participating in the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup after the Federal Government withdrew all teams from international competitions.

D’Tigress had qualified for the World Cup billed for Sydney, Australia, starting in September 2022, after defeating France and Mali in the final qualifying tournament.

FIBA’s decision comes after the deliberations with the Nigeria Basketball Federation to see how the decision could be rescinded for the defending African champions to represent the continent.

The world basketball governing body stated that Nigeria was withdrawn from participating in the tournament due to the failure of the NBBF to confirm Nigeria’s participation in the tournament.

Mali, who Nigeria beat in the 2021 AfroBasket Women’s Championship final to clinch their fifth title, will now replace the D’Tigress as Africa’s representatives.

“In subsequent communications with the NBBF, and despite FIBA’s request, it has become clear that against the circumstances created by the government’s decision, the NBBF is unable to confirm its participation in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022,” the statement said.

“Given the multiple strict deadlines that cannot be postponed in order to ensure the successful staging of a major international event (visa procedures, schedules, ticket sales, accommodations, friendly games, preliminary rosters, flight tickets, accreditations, etc.) and to protect the integrity of the competition, the FIBA Executive Committee has decided as follows:

“Nigeria’s withdrawal from the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 is confirmed.

“Mali, as the next ranked team from Group B of the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022 Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, is invited to participate in the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2022.”

BREAKING: Tennis Queen Serena Williams Announces Retirement

The United States tennis champion, Serena Williams, announced on Tuesday that ‘the countdown has begun’ to her retirement from the sport.

Williams, a 23-time Grand Slam winner, added that a time has come in her life for her to move in a different direction.

The 41-year-old said in a post on Instagram that she has to focus on being a mum and achieve her spiritual growth.

Williams, hinted at her retirement after her win in Toronto on Monday night.

But she confirmed the news with a first-person piece in Vogue on Tuesday morning.

Serena wrote: “Believe me, I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair.

“A lot of people don’t realize that I was two months pregnant when I won the Australian Open in 2017.

“But I’m turning 41 this month, and something’s got to give.

“I have never liked the word retirement. It doesn’t feel like a modern word to me. I’ve been thinking of this as a transition, but I want to be sensitive about how I use that word, which means something very specific and important to a community of people.

“Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.

“A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family.”

She added that she’s targeting one more run at US Open glory in New York later this month.

Serena said: “Unfortunately I wasn’t ready to win Wimbledon this year. And I don’t know if I will be ready to win New York.

“But I’m going to try. And the lead-up tournaments will be fun.”
