BEING A PRESS RELEASE ON THE DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE MANAGEMENT OF KWARA STATE COLLEGE OF ARABIC AND ISLAMIC LEGAL STUDIES (CAILS) AND THE LEADERSHIP OF THE ABOVE NAMED ASSOCIATION.
For the past few months the leadership of the apex students’ Union body in the state has been receiving series of letters in form of petitions, warnings and threats from some aggrieved and concerned students of the above-named institution concerning the conduct of the statutory Students’ Union elections,” the state of the school campus and other related issues.
Amidst busy schedules, it was deemed necessary that the apex body of students intervenes as it proves to be a pressing issue that must be attended to; to avert some unforeseen negative circumstances.
NANS/JCC Kwara axis, going by the laid down rule of engagement, wrote a letter to the management of the school for consultation on the said issues.
As a responsible management, the leadership of the association was invited for a session which signifies their readiness for dialogue; which is the best form of resolving issues.
As a union with her ideology; on the 7th day of November 2018; at about 12noon the association stormed the campus for the scheduled dialogue session. In attendance was the Provost of the institution, the registrar, the Dean Students affairs, and some other top ranking management team. On the student’s side was the leadership of NANS/JCC Kwara ably led by her chairman, Comrade Olosasa Saheed.
Having gotten the content of our letter, The provost after brief introduction outrightly denied all the allegations levied against the school. He reiterated his commitment to unionism. In his words, “as an active unionist during my school days; and as a civil servant I can’t in any way move against anything that has to do with unionism”. He however accept the fact that there was a slight delay in the conduct of the session’s Student Union elections due to the industrial action embarked upon by the staff of the college. He equally blamed the immediate past executive of the union, for their inability to conduct the elections as it is their constitutional duty and not that of the Management. Saying academic calendar can’t be amended for union election most especially when there has been distortion.
The provost appealed to the leadership of the Association that the elections will be conducted as soon as the student resume fully on the campus.
in his remarks, the registrar commended the leadership of the association for her maturity and the swift intervention in a bid to broker peace. He said in the past, the union would have resolved to confrontation against dialogue. The deputy provost, as well as the Dean students affairs, promised to communicate the leadership of NANS/JCC Kwara of the new dates for the elections.
Standing in for the students, the NANS Kwara chairman. Comrade Olosasa Saheed affirmed the commitment of the association to peaceful and ideological unionism. He, however, reiterated the students’ demand for elections at the appropriate time as stipulated by the constitution of the union. He appealed to the management not to allow further delay on the conduct of the election.
The association secretary also added that it is better to avert the circumstances that might arise as a result of the students going to the street in order to press home their demands and rights. He urged the management to see the students union as a partner in progress towards the growth of the school.
The leadership of NANS/JCC Kwara, hereby implore the entirety of the student of Kwara State College of Arabic and Islamic Legal Studies (CAILS) to remain calm and be law-abiding, as their interest will be protected in the best possible legal manner including demonstration if required.
